What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance of your teeth, gums, and/ or bite. It can include procedures such as teeth whitening, veneers and crowns for example, and particularly refers to treatments which are elective.

Teeth whitening

With our dentist Navan, we find that one of our most popular cosmetic dental procedures is teeth whitening. This can be done in a variety of ways, here at Navan Dental we offer bespoke at-home whitening kits. You can expect to first be invited for a consultation at which we will assess your mouth and teeth, checking that you are a suitable candidate for teeth whitening treatment. Following this we will take impressions from which your customised trays will be created. You will be shown how to apply the bleaching agent to prepare you for carrying out your treatment at home.

Our dentist Navan will be pleased to answer any questions about teeth whitening or give any advice which you may need in order to proceed with treatment.

Veneers

Another popular cosmetic dental procedure is to have porcelain veneers. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are placed over the front surface of your teeth to improve the aesthetics of your smile. In order for veneers to be fitted, our dentist will begin by filing away a thin layer of your enamel. This creates a roughened surface to which the dental adherent is added. The adherent is what bonds the veneers to the teeth.

Veneers can be used to combat a variety of issues, such as gaps, stains, and misshapen teeth. It may be that you wish to correct a slight misalignment, or close a small gap between your teeth, both of which can be addressed through the use of veneers. Because veneers are made for a particular individual, they can be adapted in shape and size to help create an even, yet natural-looking smile. It is possible to choose to have just one veneer, or indeed to have a whole set installed (this is sometimes referred to as a smile makeover). When looked after properly, veneers can last up to 10 years.

Crowns

Crowns are another option for improving the appearance of teeth. A crown is a cap that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to help restore its shape and function. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes, such as to improve the colour or shape of a tooth. In order to prepare a tooth for a crown to be fitted, it must first be reshaped in order to create space for the crown to be placed on top. This is often carried out under local anaesthetic. Once your tooth has been reshaped we will take an impression so that your crown can be custom made for a secure fit.
