When you need to replace lost teeth

Thursday, 14th March, 2019

When your teeth start to fail or you get one or two knocked out, your dentist will tell you that it is important to get them replaced as soon as possible. This is because teeth keep each other in place, so when there are gaps, it destabilises the adjacent teeth. They can start to wander and even tip into the gap.

Also, when there is a tooth missing, the jawbone reacts to the loss by dissolving itself. It needs tooth roots in it in order to continue to renew the bone cells in the area. The only tooth restoration method that replaces roots is dental implants. In Navan, you can get dental implants fitted with us at Navan Dental.

How dental implants in Navan work

Navan dental implants replace tooth roots. They look like small posts or screws and are hollow with an internal thread.

We put the dental implants into your jawbone using a local anaesthetic. This may not sound like it's enough, but there are far fewer nerves in the jawbone, so there is less pain transmitted. If you are very nervous about this minor surgical operation, we can also give you sedation. This will deeply relax you throughout the procedure, although you will be able to respond to us if we need to communicate with you.

Once the dental implants are in place, you will have to wait for 2-6 months for them to integrate with your jawbone. During this time, the bone will grow new tissue all over the surface of the dental implants. When this process, called osseointegration, is complete, the implant will be held in place very firmly.

During osseointegration, you will need to stick to a soft food diet, but once it is over, you can eat whatever you like; yes, even chewy steaks and crunchy vegetables.

Maintenance

Taking care of your dental implants in Navan is as easy as taking care of your natural teeth, just brushing, flossing and regular plaque removal sessions with the hygienist here at Navan Dental.

Why not come in for a consultation? We can take a good look at your teeth and jawbone and let you know if dental implants are right for you.
